Clarkstown Unveils Brand-New Fitness Equipment in Community Centers

There’s no doubt that staying fit and exercising are two extremely important factors in
maintaining our overall health. The Town of Clarkstown has a long history of providing
its residents with the parks, facilities, and equipment needed to participate in a wide
range of recreational and fitness activities. I’m now proud to announce that the Town
has completed the installation of brand-new, state-of-the-art fitness equipment in the
Street School, Congers, and Pascack Community Centers. A previous update to the
equipment and facilities at the Central Nyack Community Center had already been
completed, and now residents can work out using modern equipment at all four of our
Community Center gyms. Over 70 new pieces of equipment have been installed, most
of which offer at least some level of multifunctionality, providing a greatly enhanced
range of exercise options designed to meet the needs of everyone—from serious
bodybuilders to novices and seniors looking to stay active.

The newly outfitted fitness rooms now feature advanced strength-training machines,
cardio-based machines, and multifunctional fitness stations for those focused on getting
or staying fit. The quality of the new equipment is leaps and bounds ahead of what was
previously available, and offers a huge advancement in versatility to achieve full body
workouts. The new equipment is more durable and user friendly than anything we have
had in the past. Residents visiting the community centers can expect to see a variety of
new features on digital consoles, providing more information on fitness metrics than
ever before.

Use of the gym equipment is free to all residents with a Community Center ID card,
which is available for free by registering at the Parks & Recreation Office at 31 Zukor
Road in New City. In addition to the free access, the Town offers a number of fee-based
classes and programs from personal training options to group fitness classes. Each
class is tailored to specific fitness levels and physical abilities. Senior classes are also
available, including one focused on safety when performing routine, daily tasks. For a
full listing, please visit the Town’s Parks & Recreation website.

These equipment upgrades represent the latest in a series of significant investments
Clarkstown has made to modernize and enhance the health and fitness opportunities
available to residents. The new turf soccer field at Zukor Park has been a great success
in extending the playing season and minimizing weather-related downtime for our youth
soccer players. The new multi-use natural grass field at the former Rockland Country
Day School recently opened and has been busy hosting youth lacrosse. The Town is
now nearing completion of a major upgrade and expansion to the fields at Germonds
Park. Over the fall, turf infields will be installed at multiple fields at the Lake Nanuet
complex. New pickleball facilities in Congers and New City have seen tremendous
activity, and the basketball courts throughout the town were all resurfaced and updated
with new backboards, rims, and nets.

Inclusiveness has been a driving factor behind many of these improvements. The new
fitness equipment is designed to be accessible to a wider range of users, as the Town
endeavors to create fitness spaces that serve everyone. The Town constructed a brand
new, all-inclusive playground named in honor of recently-deceased, former Councilman
Mark Woods, which opened just over a month ago at Zukor Park in New City. The West
Nyack Hamlet Park Playground, which opened in 2023, has many features that are
geared toward accessibility.

Again, these individual enhancements are all part of a broader commitment to provide
our residents with a broader range of recreational and fitness opportunities. I hope that
you and your family will find something appealing in our offerings to get you up and
moving on a path to better health and well-being.
